Training- Perimeter Moves

The Rip Through

The Rip Through is also known as a sweep.

The Rip Through is a quick motion moving the ball from one side of the body to the other without allowing a close defender to get their hand on the ball.

The Rip Through should be done low below the hands of the defender.

A double rip brings the ball from one side of the body to the other and then back to the original side the ball was on.

Jab Step

The purpose of the jab step is to get the defense to move and react to your fake and then attack.

Too many players try to take their man off the dribble.

You can move much faster by faking without the dribble and then attack with the dribble.

You can see here that Curry’s jab step has caused the defense to be off balance.

Curry can now drive or shoot because the defense is in no position to stop him.

After the initial step you can continue on in the same direction, cross over with the next step, or step back to shoot depending on how the defense reacts.

The fake is best sold if the player with the ball moves quickly and has a lot of body and ball movement to sell the fake.
