Man to Man Offense
2 Philosophies for starting our offense:
1. If we do not have to take the ball out of bounds before gaining possession, then we look to push the pace under control and get a good shot.
2. If we have to take the ball out of bounds then we get in the "1-2-2" formation and run one of our plays.
3. Either way if we do not score in transition or off our quick hitters then we flow into the "Pick Away Offense".
Pick Away Offense
1. If you pass from the perimeter then you pick away.
2. If there is no one to pick away for look for a possible pin down screen.
3. After the pick, one player goes to the basket and one player stays on the perimeter.
4. The goal of the screener is to make the defender go over the top and chase his man.
Actions/Plays:
Plays that start in the middle of the floor:
"Utah"-Pick & Roll
"Texas"-Double High Pick & Roll. The forward whose pick is not used rim runs. The guards stay in the corner.
"Spain"-A pick & roll with the other forward then setting a back screen for the screener of the pick and roll.
Plays that start at the wing:
"Wisconsin"-Pick & Roll on the wing for the ball side guard and ball side forward.
"Hawaii"-PG passes to the guard on the wing then chases the pass and receives a handoff back. The PG then ATTACKS the basket.
"Piston"-PG dribbles at the guard on the wing who sets a screen for him. The ball side forward sets a screen for the guard who set the screen.
Plays that start at the elbow area:
"Elbow"- PG passes the ball to a forward at the elbow or a little higher. The other forward sets a back screen for the PG. If the PG does not get the ball off the screen, then he screens for one of the guards in either corner.
"Fred"-PG passes the ball to a guard on the wing. The ball side forward sets a screen for the weakside forward to roll to the basket then post up.
Plays that start at the baseline:
"Down"-The forwards set a pin down screen for the guard in the corner. The guards go up to the wing to receive the ball. The forwards roll to the basket and post.
"NUMBER PLAY"- I will call out the jersey number of a player. That player will run a floppy set play. The other three players set up in various screening positions and the floppy player cuts off of them.

Defensive Terminology:
"No Middle"-We do not allow the other team to dribble into, catch a pass in, or get an offensive rebound in the lane.
"Ball Pressure"-The on the ball defender should be close enough to touch his man and put pressure on the offense.
"Protect the Nail"-If you are guarding a player out top he is not allowed to dribble between the elbows.
"Hands Up"'-Have active hands and use your hands to point at the ball and your man.
"See Both"-See both the ball AND your man. Do not ball watch.
"Active Hands"-When your man has the ball we want to get as many deflections as possible.
"The Hole"-This is the area in the lane right in front of the hoop. If you are the low man on the weak side you should be in the hole.
"Help Early"-The man in the hole does not wait under the basket to help. If an offensive player drives, we meet him outside the lane.
"Drop Man"-If the man in the hole goes to help. The next closest weak side defender needs to drop to the level of the ball to take away a pass to the hole defender's man.
"Take a Good Angle"-When closing out take a path to your man that takes away the drive back to the middle.
"Force Baseline"-Force your man to drive toward the baseline not back to the middle. The offense can drive at the baseline but never down the baseline.
"Safeties"-If you are designated as a safety you need to get back on defense whenever your teammates shoot. Football safety rules apply. No one from the other team gets behind you.
"Jamming"-A jamming player picks his man up full court but is off of five feet. He is not pressuring he is jamming which means to slow down the pace and take away his ability to pass quickly up the floor.
Pressure Defenses:
"Diamond"-One man on ball. Two guards at elbow. Fourth man has the area between the top of the key and half court. Fifth man is deeper than their deepest player. Trap the first pass. Take away the middle. Allow the retreat pass.
"40"-This comes from "40 Minutes of Hell". We will use this in half court situations. The player guarding the ball follows the pass and traps with the defender of the man who just caught the ball. This continues for each pass. Fly around, be aggresive, and get steals.
Zone Defenses:
"23"-2-3 Zone. We will use this every time the other team runs a BLOB play. You stay in for the rest of that possession and then return to man to man defense the next possession.
Fouling Philosophy (the stoplight method):
Red (foul right away)
Yellow (go for the steal, foul only when the ball crosses half court)
Green (No Intentional Fouling)
